TIME AND TIDE WAIT FOR NO ARTIST
We are for the next year or two putting aside our scheduled sessions and letting artists join us–wherever we are–for as little as a one week stay of your choosing, as long as we have one of our two cabins available. We hope this flexibility opens up people’s ability to attend!
-CHAPTER CHARLESTON- Current through early June ‘26
One week or more stays aboard SV Hawa. You will have a private cabin, personal studio space, and access to the rest of the shop on board. We can do trips in the area on the boat, as well as visit the city.
What to Expect:
We will be based in Charleston, South Carolina, a vibrant community abuzz with festivals, museums, art, and history. Some of your time can be spent visiting the many attractions and exploring the city, while also having plenty of studio time on board. We can plan trips in the area and explore the waterways of the South Carolina coast. It’s pretty open to what you want to do, even if you just want to stay on board and focus on your work. To facilitate exploration, I have two folding bicycles and two kayaks on board.
I am teaching a sculpture class at CofC until April 22nd, then we have a wedding to attend at the end of May, so our plan is to head north early June.
-CHAPTER TRANSIENT- June ‘26 and beyond
The same situation applies as above, but now the slow journey northward begins. We will tie up and spend time in Baltimore (canton specifically) mid-July for at least a month, besides that we aren’t yet sure when we will be where, or where we will be when, but we can plan your pickup and drop off as it comes.
What to Expect:
Being transient, it’s hard to know what to expect–that’s why it’s so amazing. We explore the waterways, the towns, the people, and get to see our world in a beautiful unique way. With the studio in the bosom of Hawa, there is always time and room to make art. Other possibilities are finding an uninhabited island or beach and staying anchored there for several days to create work ashore. Or we go offshore–weather permitting–so you can experience the vastness of the ocean. Without a set schedule, the options are vast…
-THE NUMBERS-
Unfortunately we are still self-funded, we need some income to operate. This will hopefully change in the future once the residency brings in more external funding. Of course external grants or funding is available in many places, if you need any assistance with that or documentation we are more than happy to work with you. We highly recommend at least one full week, but are flexible if you have a specific idea. Some occasions we might have work studies available.
Weekly stay: $600 to the residency for room and board. This covers food on board but not things like restaurants and museums on shore.
Daily stay: $80 for any extra days you stay under 7 in a row
Monthly stay: $1800 If for example you start weekly and end up staying a month, you will qualify for monthly.
Our goal is to share this incredible experience with artists to facilitate their conceptual and technical growth; your journey starts with an email. We hope to hear from you soon.
Fair winds,
Michael and Jenn
